Problems of immigrant students in Canada

Immigrant Students Problem

Do you know what problems and challenges are faced by (12th-grade) immigrant students going to Canada?

Most of you have decided to start a new life in Canada. Leaving home and creating a new life in an unknown place is not an easy thing. Many students take this opportunity and succeed in making the best out of it. At the same time, others get distracted from their path and indulge in bad company. Are you aware of the problems of immigrant students in Canada?

Canada is a land of opportunities. You will surely succeed if you work hard on your dreams. All you have to do is remain focused and work on improving yourself.

How to Choose the Right College?

Choosing the right college for study is the most critical step. Before confirming any college, make sure you research it properly. Do not trust anyone who says they can provide you with a chance to study in Canada because many scams are going on in India. Before trusting anyone, research them correctly.

Try to contact the graduates of the college to know about their experience with the college and staff. Look out for job opportunities provided by the college, the environment of the campus, faculty, and other facilities available on campus.

Are you Enrolled in the Right Program?

Before confirming the program, make sure it is right for you. Do not opt for any course for the sake of coming to Canada. And think you can change it after coming here because it is not that easy now as rules have changed. Before pursuing any education, make sure you’re not studying a useless subject that you cannot use in any way in your future.

You must have some knowledge of the field you are going to choose. Choose the program according to your interests before proceeding to search out for job opportunities in your area.

Dealing with Homesickness

Homesickness Immigrant Students

This is one of the major problems with immigrant students. Some of you have family, friends, and relatives in Canada to take care of you after arriving here. But for most, it’s a new start, a new place, new people, a new struggle. Everyone misses their family and friends at some point in this period. To overcome this phase, most students get attracted to the lousy company and start drinking, wasting time on useless stuff.

The best way to deal with homesickness is to focus on yourself. Work on improving your skills. Spend more time studying, meditate, and exercise daily to keep your mind and body fresh. Go out on a walk; spend some time in the lap of nature. Canada has natural beauty. It’s the best place to explore for nature lovers.

Volunteer as much as you can, as this will add to your experience and diverts your mind, which also helps make friends and increase your network.

Update your Etiquette

An intelligent person updates himself according to his surroundings. Basic rules of manners are universal. But we do not practice these rules too much in India. However, in Canada, this is common. People usually use words like Please, Sorry, Thank you and Excuse me.

In Canadian culture, people greet anyone passing by them, which is not common in India. So, students feel a little awkward while practicing these habits.

In India, we mostly greet those people whom we know. We do not talk with anyone passing by us. So when students come here, they do not respond to the greetings of others, which does not look nice. Canadian takes this as rudeness and ignorance.

Do you follow the Basic Rules of Hygiene?

Most of you have a maid back home to clear your mess. But in Canada, no one is the owner, and no one is a maid. Everyone is treated equally, whether they earn more or less.

Do your work by yourself. Keep your house and workplace clean. Many students make a mess and do not clean up before leaving. Clean your kitchen after use as everyone is waiting to use it after you. Broom the floor before leaving the kitchen. Wash the dishes after eating and clean the microwave after using. By following these small steps, you can keep your surroundings hygienic.

Ask others for help if you do not know how to use something. Many children do not use the washroom properly. Always dump your shit correctly and dispose of your belongings in the bin. Keeping the bathroom clean helps to prevent the spread of bacteria and other infections.

Travelling in Buses

Newcomers usually speak too loud in buses, which is not a good thing. Never talk or play excessively loud music as this will disturb others. Never speak too loud on the phone because this will disturb the privacy of others. Leave your seat for an older person, a pregnant woman, and a disabled person.

Many students across the road from the middle instead of the zebra crossing. When children are late from college or work, what they do is instead of crossing the road on the zebra crossing, they walk in the middle of the road or run behind the bus.

Do you have a Habit of Arguing over Small Things?

In India, children are brought up with love and affection. So they argue over every little thing to get their work done. They follow the same practice in Canada. But in Canada, people are not used to it. The argument is considered an insult in Canadian culture. It doesn’t look polite to them. They think you are insulting them by arguing.

Most students argue with their owners of the house and workplace for restricting them. They try to prove their point, which looks arrogant to others. Many students argue with their professors or other staff in the college. But this is not the right thing to do. Put your point in front of others and never argue. Let them decide what they want.

Never defend yourself. Sometimes arguments make the situation worse. Maybe you are arguing over the useless thing that does not require any explanation. Learn to accept the situation. Everything does not work according to your planning; try to defuse the situation by saying sorry.

Self-dependent

We all have prominent families back home to admire and support us in our difficult times. But in Canada, only a few people have someone to love and appreciate.

Love and support are good, but sometimes this bounds people’s creativity and independence. When you always have someone to stand by you, you will feel less stressed, and you depend on others for support and appreciation.

Learn to be independent in life. You don’t know when someone is going to leave you. So make a habit of doing your work by yourself. Do not expect that others will change their plans for you.

Document Threat as one of the Problems of Immigrant Students

The biggest mistake students make is that they easily trust anyone. Not everyone praising and admiring you is thinking good for you. Snakes are hiding behind these smiling faces.

Never share your personal information as if sin number, passport details, bank account details, debit and credit card pins, signature, and other complex documents as permits and mark sheets with anyone. Before handing your permits and sin number to any employer, make sure he is not faking you by his position and job. Never sign any job-related or any other contract with anyone until you are on a study permit.

Many students get fooled by fake calls as if the caller says we are calling from Service Canada or Scotia bank, and we detected an unknown transaction in your account. Then they ask you to share your details with them so they can help you. But in fact, these are all scam callers. Never respond to them. Do not get hyper in such a situation and get fooled by these people.

Be active and act smart and ask to call the police first before taking any action. Or always share this kind of talk with some elder or your friends. Maybe they can guide you like any one of them has confronted the same situation.

Importance of Getting a Driving License

A driving license is the priority of students in Canada. It is an id proof which everyone needs, as carrying your passport to every place is difficult—driving license as some procedure to follow. However, most of the students neglect it, and then, later on, they have to pay higher prices and insurance for their vehicles. The older the license, the less will be the insurance of the car.

Importance of Getting Security License and other licenses

Finding a job is getting complicated nowadays and as the count of students is increasing every four months. Finding a job is becoming quite challenging in the present time. Most students prefer a security job, as this is not a difficult job and they can study efficiently even at their work. Getting security and other license is adding a skill to your list. You will have more job opportunities if you have any certification and license.

Bad Company

Making friends is good, but before you trust anyone, make sure you are not investing your time in the wrong place. Sometimes the person you believe is right for you and is not just faking at your face. You do not know what is going on in someone’s mind. Most of the time, people only get attached to you for their benefits. Getting accustomed to the wrong company can be a significant problem with immigrant students.

Many people take advantage of other’s weaknesses and then leave in need. When students come to Canada, they need someone for the company. Most students get attracted to drinkers and drug takers, as this is something new for them. First, they start this as a one-time thing, and then they get addicted to it and end up spoiling their life.

Drinking and Drugs

Loneliness makes students do worse stuff in their life. It is a life spoiler for some of them as they do not know how to deal with it. To overcome it, they start drinking and taking drugs.

They think drinking makes them forget their problems. Sometimes they do not have the guts to face what’s going on in their life. To forget about this all, they try to divert their mind by drinking. The person who has not seen alcohol in India starts consuming it daily under the influence of their friends. Most students drink just for fun, but they do not know that they are getting addicted. It has spoiled the future of many students in the past years.

Exercise, Meditation, and Health

It’s pretty challenging to maintain your health in a country like Canada as you do not have your family and anyone else to take care of you and your food. No one bothers whether you eat correctly or not. So it’s necessary to take care of your health. A significant problem with immigrant students is that they ignore their health while running after their careers.

Exercise and meditation are good therapy to remain healthy, fresh, and calm in this uncertain environment. Most students eat outside food because they do not know cooking or do not have time to cook. This affects their health severely. So to keep your body healthy, do some exercise daily.

Trust and Money Sharing

Trust is the hardest thing to make and the easiest thing to break. It took years and years to trust someone. However, only one single mistake can ruin the trust of years.

Students who come to Canada after 12 are not that mature; they easily trust everyone who behaves well with them. This sometimes costs them too much. They try to help everyone close to them by lending them money or by sharing their personal information. They try to help someone in need, but sometimes they trust with their money cheats them and runs away. Students mostly get caught in fraud cases over here in Canada. Nothing is wrong with helping others, but always make sure that your step is correct.

Health Insurance

Back home in India, medical procedure is comparatively easy. But over here in Canada, medical treatment is quite expensive and systematic. You have to book an appointment before visiting a doctor. Health insurance is a must. However, most students even do not know the terms and conditions of their health insurance. They do not know about the problems and treatments covered under their protection. When you are on an official drop, college insurance will not cover your health. College insurance works until you are studying.

Self Respect

Everyone faces difficulties in their life. Sometimes you reach such a stage where you have to stand up for yourself. Never lose your self-respect for anyone. Never do work, which makes you feel low in your own eyes.

It’s seen that for the sake of money and fame, many students commit the wrong things. It is becoming a significant problem for some immigrant students. All they bother is money, but with time they get to know that they have lost their respect and place in others’ life. You can earn everything in life with time but not respect. Once it’s lost, it will take a lifetime to build it. Self-respect is most important in a person’s life. If you can’t respect yourself, you will not respect anyone.
