Let’s say your resume is selected, and you have been invited for an interview now. Do you know how to present yourself and your skills effectively to the interviewer?

It can be quite demotivating if either resume or interview is not appropriately presented and that dream job slips out of your hands.

It is essential to understand what a recruiter would be looking for in a resume. As per Glassdoor, the average number of applicants per job is 250, and only one out of six candidates that apply for a job get an interview.

Your technical knowledge alone will not be enough for getting you a dream job in today’s world.

Some Essential Skills For Getting A Good Job

Let’s understand what is essential for getting a good job. As per Career Builder, 62% of employers are explicitly looking for soft skills. As per The State of the American Job Report Pew Research, Jobs requiring social skills have grown 83%, while Jobs requiring analytical skills (computer/critical thinking) grew 77%. The combined talent of both social and analytical skills has increased by 94%.

We gather a lot from the mistakes that others make. Over the years, research has been conducted that indicates the most common mistakes found on resumes.

As per Wonderlic, 93% of employers consider soft skills an “essential” or “significant” factor in their hiring decisions. Make sure to mention those soft skills on your resume, even if you are in a technical field. Although your technical expertise is essential, it’s not the only thing that will get you a job.

Ensuring that your resume is error-free shows that you are accurate and truthful about your experience. You check your work for spelling errors and pay attention to details. As per The Ladders, 80.4% of resume errors come from mistakes in former job experience descriptions, 71.6% of resume errors occur due to the misrepresentation of skills, and 68.7% of resume errors had missing accomplishments. Furthermore, as per Career Builder, 75% of employers caught a lie on a resume.

It is pertinent to ensure that the social media profile is complete, as the recruiter may check your profile.

As per Career Builder, 60% of recruiters use social networking sites to research candidates, and 59% of recruiters take the help of search engines to look up candidates. 41% of employers say they might not interview a candidate if they can’t find them online.

It’s undoubtedly essential these days to have a social media presence, but you must also be aware of what you share, post or write on your social media pages. As per Career Builder, recruiters will disqualify candidates if they find evidence of the following on their social media profiles:

  •  Provocative or Inappropriate Content- 46%
  • Alcohol and Drugs- 43%

Let’s say you have been selected for an interview. How you present yourself to the interviewer will determine if you make it to the next selection process level. Your hygiene and how you dress and carry yourself, as well as your professional manners, will sway your recruiter accordingly.
